Did You Know Your Hedgehog is Practically Blind and “Sees” the World With Its Ears and Nose?

If you’ve ever watched a hedgehog move, you’ll notice their tiny nose is always twitching and their ears are constantly alert. There is a fascinating reason for this: Hedgehogs are almost completely blind. While they have eyes, they don’t see shapes or colors the way we do. Instead, they navigate their world using a “sensory map” made of sounds and smells. In this article, we reveal 7 shocking facts about hedgehogs that prove they are much more than just cute, prickly balls.

1. The Invisible World: Seeing Without Eyes

Because hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures, their eyesight is very poor. They cannot see depth or fine details. To compensate, nature has given them a “super-nose” and “super-ears.” A hedgehog can hear insects moving deep underground and can smell a piece of food from blocks away. When they move, they aren’t “looking” where they go; they are following a trail of scents and vibrations.

2. The “Self-Anointing” Spit Bath

This is perhaps the most bizarre behavior you will ever see. When a hedgehog smells something new—like your perfume or a new plant—it will chew on it, create a thick, white foam in its mouth, and then contort its body to smear that spit all over its quills. It looks like a scene from a horror movie, but it’s actually how they “bookmark” new smells and protect themselves!

3. Built-In Body Armor (5,000+ Spikes)

A hedgehog’s back is covered in approximately 5,000 to 7,000 quills. These aren’t just for show. Each quill is hollow and acts like a shock absorber. If a hedgehog falls from a high place, it curls into a ball and literally “bounces” off the ground, using its spikes to protect its internal organs from the impact.

4. Snake Venom? No Problem!

One of the most “badass” facts about hedgehogs is their natural immunity to snake venom. They have a special protein in their blood that neutralizes the toxins of venomous snakes like adders. In a fight between a snake and a hedgehog, the hedgehog often wins by curling into a ball and letting the snake bite its sharp needles before eating the snake!

5. The Deadly Milk Myth

Many people think it’s kind to leave a bowl of milk out for hedgehogs, but this is a deadly mistake. Hedgehogs are strictly lactose intolerant. Drinking cow’s milk causes them severe digestive distress and can lead to fatal dehydration. Always stick to fresh water and high-quality cat food.

6. They Are Olympic Runners

Don’t let those short legs fool you. In a single night, a healthy hedgehog can run up to 2 miles (3 kilometers)! They are incredibly active and need a lot of space to roam, which is why a running wheel is a “must-have” for any pet hedgehog owner.

7. “Brumation” vs. Hibernation

If a pet hedgehog gets too cold, its body might try to go into hibernation. However, for pet hedgehogs, this is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. Unlike wild hedgehogs, pets don’t have the fat reserves to survive. Owners must keep their environment at a constant temperature of 72-80°F (22-26°C) to keep them safe.

⚠️ WARNING: Your hedgehog might be immune to snake venom, but it is NOT immune to what’s in your kitchen! Some common snacks can be fatal for your prickly friend. Is your pet’s diet safe?
